Right After the
1st Wave of Logging

... the photos below were taken on May 3rd, 2008,
as we walked a loop around what's left of the base camp.

It may be handy to print out the above map and look at each of the arrows. They show roughly where each photo was taken, and towards what direction. The letters in each of the next few descriptions relate back to the above map.

(A) The first big shock was at the juncture of the roads by the gates, just before you go up the big hill leading towards the main camp area and it's parking lot. This is a view looking to the path on the left.

(B) Same as A, but just a little closer. This used to be very wooded, with branches so low they'd brush your car.

(C) Doesn't seem to be very selective. :-(

(D) This looks East, along the road that goes past the Seneca site and the rifle range.

(E) The Oneida site. The tallest thing left standing is the totem pole bearing the name of the site.

(F) The fire ring at Oneida, looking up towards the showers. Notice how empty it all looks. Some think this makes it better.

(G) Oneida again, looking up the hill from the outhouse and wash stand.

(H) Very sad... Notice the ugly stumps left to rot around the Cayuga site.

(I) Remember the chapel? Where the Nature classes were held?

(J) We can only hope that some of the $80k the council got for cutting down all the trees will go towards maybe building some things back up.

(K) Looking back toward the boat house from the path that leads towards the flag area.

(L) Skid trail where there used to be trees.

(M) Looking up from the junction near the health lodge.

Still near (M). Notice the stumps.

(N) What happened to the Commissioners Corner, where we'd have the weekly SPL & leaders meetings during the week?

(P) Looking up towards where scout craft and such used to be held. Kinda ugly now.

(O) Sadder still is the destruction of the woods that used to surround the Apache and Ute sites, as seen in this view.

(Q) Going up the walk way towards the shower house.

Newer and wider path down to Oneida.

(R) Oh boy! Fewer trees and more parking. Maybe we'll be able to pave it all over and make it even better!
