Y'gotta do the BeefEater tour!
This was the first stop of our first full day in town, largely on the
recommendation of one of my work-mates. He said if there was only one
thing we could find time for, this would have to be it.
He was right. |
It's not possible to put down all the things we learned
while on tour with the guy above (who are called Beef Eaters, by the way).
We learned history, trivia, about executions, crown jewels... everything.
At first we weren't sure it it would be worth the trouble, because there was
such a crowd, but it was definitely worth the wait.
The visit to the Tower would not have been the same if we'd
not spent time with this guy. |

We
didn't try making this guy smile or anything. That's a real machine
gun, with a real nasty knife attached to the end. In the building
behind him are the crown jewels (amazing display). Outside was this cool
canon, that Matt got a kick out of.
(Remember, you can click on any of the images to see them in much greater
detail.) |
To the right is the building holding the crown jewels.
We learned that
they actually lock the Beef Eaters and their families into the grounds
during the night. Apparently it's a great honor to be selected as one
of these guys.
Below is the Tower Bridge, easily seen from the castle here. The
building shown on the lower right houses all sorts of displays of weaponry
of the various periods in history. The basement of it used to be the
dungeon where they tortured people. In now holds the gift shop.

If / when we go back here some day, we'll have to allow for much more
time to see the Tower of London. We cut our visit a little short so
that we could move along and visit other places.

I have no idea what that funky building is for. There's too much
to remember. Even so, just to the right of the funky building is where
they held many of the public executions. It's where they disemboweled
Brave Heart.
