Going to Versailles was Matt's idea.
He knew of it from his AP European History class, and was
encouraged when he saw that it was only a 30 minute train ride from our
hotel
This place is massive. At its peak, it consumed 30
square miles. Now, as a tourist attraction, it's only 3 square miles,
but it looks like a lot more than that! |

If you take a look at some of the large panorama pictures below, you can
get an impression of how vast this place was. And you can quite easily see
why the peasants of the day revolted against the leadership. While
they were starving in the fields, the royalty of the day was surrounded by
obscene levels of wealth and opulence. To be honest, it was a bit
overwhelming and after a while it could wear you down.
At least there was a tiny attempt at this place to tell you things in
English. You could get little MP3 players that would give you a
narrative for various rooms you were in. |
To the right and below are just a couple samples of how
ornate the insides were. These are frescos painted onto the ceilings.
But you know, after a while, we found ourselves getting numb from it all.
It's just too much. Looking back on it all, although there
was a lot of stuff still to do in France (see the inside of the Louvre,
visit the d'Orsey, or go back when The Catacombs are open), we could have
spent a little less time in France, and traded it for more time in London or
Germany. Your mileage may vary. |
