It
was the first place we went to...
... but it was closed.
So we re-arranged our plans and came back the second day, just to ride
the tram up the side of this mountain. It's the 2nd highest Gondola in
all of Germany, and brought us up about 6 or 7 thousand feet... higher than
I normally fly!
At the bottom, we were in short sleeve shirts. At the top... well,
take a look for yourselves. :-) |
Despite how cold it looks, it really wasn't all that bad at
the top. Many of the people seem to spend a bit of time up there.
The lodge at the top has a nice wrap-around deck outside, and they set out
reclining lawn chairs, letting people lay back and enjoy the mountain air.
We spent only a couple hours up there. Tracy stayed
at the lodge, while Matt and I trekked up some paths for different views. |

Again,
photos just can't capture the view. The edges of some of the places we
were standing on were really, really steep! Which, of course,
meant that Matt and I had to start rolling snowballs down them, partly in
the hopes of starting an avalanche. :-) In the photo to the left,
you can see just how steep the ride up was on the gondola. The movie
was shot by Matt during the ride down, as you look at the cliff faces along
the way.
In the photos below, check out how small the town is below. |

I don't even know what to write concerning these photos.
It was breath-taking.
Mittenwald
|
Matt's name in his 3rd year German class is Tobias, hence the note in
the snow to the right. Having him know German proved to come in pretty
handy on a number of occasions. |

Inside
the lodge at the top was a nice little cafe, where you could get anything
from a cup of coffee to a full meal. We opted to hold off on lunch until
we got back to the town below. It had lots of cute little stores and
such that we wanted to stroll around. We ended up at an outdoor pizza
place, where we ordered a pepperoni pizza.
Sort of...
To them, pepperoni means those little spicy hot peppers we generally call
pepperoncini. I thought it came out pretty good. But then again,
i also had another beer, so I was feeling happy anyway. |
Two
final notes...
Some guy came to the top of the mountain with his little
kid and dog, and they ski'd down! We have no idea how they did this.
There must have been some other route down that we couldn't see, because
there was no way they could make it down the same route we took up.
By this point in out trip, my camera was starting to act
up, and we were running out of memory. Pity, because the town of
Mittenwald was beautiful. If you check a close-up of the church to the
right, you'll notice that the face of it is painted on. These frescos
are on the outside of homes and buildings alike, giving a fairy-tale look to
the city. Very sweet. |
