It's pronounced
"KILL-main-hamm jail"
and is a really big deal to visit... kinda like checking out Alcatraz when
you're in San Francisco. Check the Wikipedia page if you want the full
history.
Our tour guide was wonderful... very good story teller, and she
helped add to the somber story of this place.
Although this place is significantly older than Alcatraz, it
was in notably better shape.
This classic area can be also seen in a variety of films,
such as "In the Name of the Father".
The cross here shows where they execute one of the fourteen
people responsible for the 1916 uprising.
He was already going to die from injuries and subsequent infections.
They wheeled the ambulance up to this door, carried him only as far as they
needed to, strapped him into a chair since he was too weak to stand, and had
the firing squad do their work.
This is the other side of the same area, where the bulk of
the firing squad executions happened.
